LT Water Storage and Old Flour
I have a couple of these plastic jugs http://safecastleroyal.com/item_87/C...r-Storage.html
for my water storage. I just opened them up from the shipping and they smell like plastic inside. Are they safe for water storage or will the plastic leech into my water? What is the best way to keep the water fresh in these? Do I need any additives? Are there any better water storage solutions than my 15 gallon plastic barrels? I also had an old bag of flour. The bag on the outside got some mold on it. I don't want to eat it, is there an outside use for that flour? Edit: I rinsed out the barrels a bit with hot water and letting them air dry out. |
Re: LT Water Storage and Old Flour
Can anyone help me out? I am going to use my Gravidyn filtration system to fill up the barrels, do I need to add anything to the water? Can I store them in the basement?

Bleach OK, but outdated. After >1 year the bleach turns to harmless salts and loses its disinfection properties.I have used colloidal silver 12-14 PPM 10 drops per quart, 2-3 years later fine tasting water.
Clorox bleach does have a shelf life losing 1-2 % strength per year.Your 5.25% Clorox is only 4% something after one year.Best to buy chlorine 3-inch tablets (many types) from the swimming pool supply store ,they last for years stored properly(not near any metal). Activated carbon charcoal will suck out all the chlorine if overclorinated- If serious about long term storage-boil the water and container, add collidal silver-seal, good for years and years.I would use Clorox for adding to questionable water before drinking-and that would be after running through carbon. Do not forget iodine,pasturization>180 degrees for 8-12 hours, ozonation bulbs cheap,... Remember, water is water,we have the same amount now as we did during the flood-the same water-none leaves the planet and into space-which brings up another topic-water shortages???????Where did it go??? It did not go anywhere-it is all still on this planet.Safe potable water a different story, learn how to disinfect water ,surface water, sewer water, brackish etc... and you will never be without it. |

We've used Oxy-Stabile in our 30 and 35 gal. water barrels for years and after 5 years, the water has been fine. I keep the barrels in our crawlspace (concrete floor) and have them set on pieces of pressure treated 4x4. One thing, keep the barrels dark. Even in a dark crawlspace, I put black garbage bags over each one to keep any light out and also to keep them clean. Keeping light from the barrels is one of the most important things to do toi keep water fresh and inhibit the growth of algae, etc.. |

Walker. thanks for the advice about oxy- stabil, I need to store 6 55 gal food grade water barrels for thermal mass in the new green house...or I might go cheapass and use bleach.
Water is amazing... We are using the same water that has been around since the beginning. Dinosaur piss or the tears and sweat of Christ. Water recycled over and over. They don't make water any more.. same goes for land. |
